Nature Does Not Have a Design Problem, People Do
William McDonough
  • William McDonough

Designer, advisor, co-author of “Cradle to Cradle”. Time magazine “Hero for the Planet” (1999)

NATURE DOES NOT HAVE A DESIGN PROBLEM, PEOPLE DO

William McDonough will discuss the importance of nature-based solutions in achieving sustainability and how carbon is not the enemy. He believes that in order to achieve the sustainability goals that organizations are setting for themselves, the solution lies in going back to the basics. He is an advocate of the circular economy and will share some of the best practices organizations need to consider for a truly sustainable future.

William McDonough, a globally renowned leader in sustainable design and development, will be discussing the importance of nature-based solutions in achieving sustainability. He will address how climate change cannot be addressed in isolation, and must rather be viewed as a complex issue that is interdependent with other environmental challenges. Rather than seeing carbon as ‘the enemy,’ McDonough recognizes it as the foundation of life, and believes we need to seek solutions inspired by nature to reduce and eventually eliminate human-made carbon emissions to help restore balance to the planet.

His work in architecture and sustainable design has earned him international recognition that includes being acknowledged as ‘the Mastermind of Sustainable Design’ at the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992 and named a ‘Hero of the Planet’ by Time magazine in 1999. In 2019, Fortune magazine included him in its list of the ‘World’s 50 Greatest Leaders’.

As a designer, McDonough’s interests range from global to molecular scales, and his influential ideas have been shared with audiences worldwide. His book, ‘Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things’ which he co-authored in 2002, has become a seminal text of the sustainability movement.

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION SHOWCASE

Meet the Capgemini experts at our Technology & Innovation Showcase where a team of specialist consultants from engineering and research will take you through Capgemini’s work across the “Future of Mobility”, “Future of Work” and “Future of Life”. They will be joined by data scientists and experts in the field of quantum, robotics, generative AI and green technology.

PEUGEOT HYPERCAR

The Peugeot 9X8, is the next-generation hypercar that has a hybrid engine whose performance is powered by AI.

The hybrid racing car is the result of a strong collaboration between Peugeot Sport and Capgemini, and it is set to make its mark on the next edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2023.

Injecting data and AI into motorsports is not a revolution, but with the Peugeot 9X8 hypercar, it is the next level of integration. Here, the software makes the most of the power of the hybrid 4X4 and accelerates the engineers’ decision-making in the simulator, on the test bench, and on the track.

This partnership is an opportunity to shape the future of mobility through sustainable and innovative solutions.

UNDERSEA INTELLIGENCE

Hidden deep on the seafloor, you might not expect to find a multi-cable universe, streaming vast amounts of data. But unlike the sea life calmly gliding by sensor nodes, on the surface sits an army of scientists busy listening and learning.

From the songs of humpback whales and migrating shoals of fish, to changing currents and oceanographic features, researchers at the Lofoten-Vesterålen (LoVe) Ocean Observatory are carefully monitoring this data for clues on the changing global climate.

Capgemini has supported the monitoring of the migration patterns and protection of the whales’ natural habitats. Here, ocean data is critical if we are to understand the full picture of our changing environment.

HYDROGEN CAR

Transporting people and goods accounts for nearly 20% of the world's CO2 emissions. Given its effect on climate change, transportation sectors are under tremendous pressure to innovate, adapt, and find sustainable ways to reduce their carbon footprints, such as hybridization and electrification.
To support an automotive client's ambitions, Capgemini developed an electrical solution to help reduce its carbon footprint; however, it limited the car's autonomy (mileage) to 100 km. Our engineers and experts worked together to develop a hydrogen solution that increased the autonomy from 100 to 250 km and reduced the number of batteries used. Replacing the battery with a hydrogen fuel cell and gas tank represents a major stride towards a greener and more resilient future.
